In a real life story fit for a Hollywood script - Rubin Hanan immigrates to America from a tiny Greek island as a young man at the age of 15. He settles in Montgomery, Alabama, where he marries, raises a family and in 1935 opens a corner grocery store called Penny Profit. In his store he specializes in offering the best service, the best cuts of meat and the best seasonings available in the area. His seasonings, "Mis Rubin's Black Magic Seasoning" and "Mis' Rubin's White Magic Seasoning", become essentials among his devoted customers and their popularity spreads throughout the area.

From the beginning, Mr. Rubin took great pride in offering his customers the very best grades of meat, and as an added service, he would season their selections at the corner with Mis' Rubin's Black Magic Seasoning. Indeed it was magic as the "secret dark seasoning" produced a savory flavor like no other seasoning available. As his exclusive recipe, Mr. Rubin would never sell his Black Magic Seasoning, but would only use it to season meats purchased at his store.
